Gonorrhea: Epidemiology and Pathogenesis
نویسنده
چکیده
This concise textbook is written by an international group of experts in photobiology. There are fifteen chapters dealing with a number of basic theoretical and practical aspects of the subject including photochemistry, photomedicine, and bioluminescence. It is unlikely that any individual will be equally interested in all. The quality of the writing is good, however, and terms are clearly defined. There are chapters that give the impression that they are derived from lectures and might have been more successful in the verbal form. The book is recommended as a useful resource for advanced and graduate students in biology and for persons interested in research in this important field.

Prostate cancer and sexually transmitted diseases: a meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer is the most common neoplasm of American men and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths. Research suggests that infection and subsequent inflammation may be an important risk factor in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer. In this meta-analysis, we examine the current epidemiological evidence for the association between specific sexually transmitted disea...
متن کاملRural gonorrhea in the southeastern United States: a neglected epidemic?
Some rural counties in the southeastern United States are experiencing high rates of gonorrhea; however, existing knowledge of epidemiologic patterns of gonorrhea within communities is from urban areas. This paper describes the epidemiology of gonorrhea within a rural county of North Carolina and compares it with the patterns described for large cities. Data include gonorrhea reports from priva...
متن کاملGeographic epidemiology of gonorrhea in Baltimore, Maryland, using a geographic information system.
The epidemiology of gonorrhea is characterized by geographically defined hyperendemic areas, or "cores." Geographic information system (GIS) technology offers new opportunities to evaluate these patterns. The authors developed a GIS system linked to the disease surveillance database at the Baltimore Health Department and used this system to evaluate the geographic epidemiology of gonorrhea in B...
متن کاملDefining core gonorrhea transmission utilizing spatial data.
Spatial distribution of repeat and singly occurring gonorrhea in Baltimore, Maryland, was examined to identify clusters of core transmitters. Gonorrhea reported between 2001 and 2002 was geocoded and mapped. Those with more than one gonorrhea infection separated by more than 14 days during the 2-year period were considered repeaters. Other cases were treated as isolated events. Six definitions ...
متن کاملUpdate on the management of gonorrhea in adults in the United States.
Gonorrhea, the second most commonly reported notifiable disease, is an important cause of cervicitis, urethritis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. The selection of appropriate therapy for gonorrhea (i.e., safe, highly effective, single dose, and affordable) is complicated by the ability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to develop resistance to antimicrobial therapies. This article reviews the key quest...
